Embedded Legs

Embedded legs are the four steel legs that are cast into the concrete foundation and form the connection between the crane and the ground. They are set before the concrete is poured, on a positioning template, so the base frame lands in the right place.

Construction

Heavy steel leg sections welded to an anchor or base plate, hot-dip galvanised and fitted with a levelling and positioning template. Their embedded depth and projection are set by the crane maker's foundation drawing.

Role on the crane

The embedded legs transfer the crane's vertical load, uplift and shear from the base frame into the foundation concrete, and keep the mast plumb.

Inspection and maintenance

  • Check template position, spacing and level before the pour; a mis-placed leg cannot be corrected later.
  • Confirm concrete strength has reached the specified value before erection.
  • Inspect for corrosion and mechanical damage and keep the exposed section protected.
