Wall Tie / Anchorage

Above its free-standing height, a tower crane must be tied back to the building or structure at set intervals. The wall tie, or anchorage, is the set of tie rods and brackets that does this.

Construction

Steel tie rods or tubes with wall brackets, backing frames and pins or bolted flanges, made up in matched sets to suit the tie distance and the tie level. Length and adjustment are set per the crane manual.

Role on the crane

The wall ties restrain the mast laterally and transfer wind and working loads into the building, which allows the crane to climb beyond its free-standing height while staying within design stresses.

Inspection and maintenance

  • Follow the manual's tie spacing, level and free-standing limits exactly; do not skip a tie level.
  • Confirm rod length, preload and alignment, and inspect pins, welds and brackets for wear and cracks.
  • Verify the building anchor is capable and approved; the tie is only as strong as what it fixes to.
